These rewards help fund new guides, but they never influence our verdicts. Our recommendations are based on independent research and our own ranking system.

At GamblingNerd, we review and rank casinos, sportsbooks, poker rooms, sweepstakes casinos, and offshore gambling sites using a weighted system. We look at security and licensing, banking and payouts, bonus fairness, game and software quality, customer support, mobile performance, and how easy the site is to use.

We want to help players know what to expect before they sign up. This includes whether the site is available where they live, how withdrawals work, any bonus restrictions, the protections offered, and any potential drawbacks.

We use this review process across all our target markets, we conduct additional checks for different states and provinces according to the country or region. Just because a site is available does not always mean it is legal in your country, state, or province, so please check the laws and rules in your own country, state, or province.

What Kinds of Gambling Sites Do We Review?

What Kinds of Gambling Sites Do We Review?

We review online casinos, sportsbooks, poker rooms, sweepstakes casinos, and offshore gambling sites. Some of these sites are based outside the United States and might be available in certain parts of the US, depending on where you are and which operator you choose.

Just because a site is accessible does not mean it is licensed in your state. That’s why our reviews clearly separate availability, licensing, regulatory oversight, and player protection. If a site is offshore, not licensed in your state, or uses a non-US license, we point that out in our review.

We do not recommend every site we review. A gambling site may receive a poor rating or appear on our blacklist if we find serious issues such as unpaid winnings, pirated or suspicious software, fake or unverifiable licensing, misleading bonus terms, unresolved player complaints, or safety concerns that could affect fair play.

If a site fails an important safety check, that problem can outweigh its normal score. For example, fake licenses, repeated complaints about unpaid players, or signs of rigged games can keep a site off our best-of lists or stop us from recommending it, even if it does well in other areas.

Our Metrics for Reviewing Gambling Sites

Our Metrics for Reviewing Gambling Sites

In the early days of GamblingNerd.com, all of our reviews were dictated by a weighted star-rating system. Sites that attained a 5-star rating were some of the best, even if they had a few flaws.

However, the star-rating alone wasn’t enough to really convey all the features of a gambling site. So, while the star-rating remains, it’s a quick indicator of quality, not so much a hard-and-fast ranking.

Every reviewed gambling site is scored using the same core categories. The final rating is a summary of those checks, not just a first impression or bonus comparison.

Our current weighting is:

  • Site security, licensing and trust: 25%
  • Banking options and payout process: 20%
  • Bonuses and promotions: 15%
  • Game and software variety: 15%
  • Customer service: 5%
  • Mobile compatibility: 5%
  • Site navigation and signup flow: 5%
  • Responsible gambling tools: 10%

We may add extra context for specific gambling sites types. For example, poker rooms require table traffic and tournament checks, sportsbooks require betting market and odds checks, and sweepstakes casinos require coin model, redemption, and state-availability checks.

1. Site Security & Trust (Weighted at 25%)

Licensing

  • We identify the regulatory body: Curaçao (and which master license/sub-license), Malta Gaming Authority, Kahnawake, UK Gambling Commission, or a US state regulator.
  • We locate the license number and cross-check it directly on the regulator’s public registry — we don’t just trust it because it’s printed in the footer.
  • We check the license’s history: any suspensions, fines, or revocations.
  • We don’t auto-disqualify unlicensed sites, but we flag them in the review and put them through more rigorous testing of safety features.

Legal & Policy Documents

  • We review the Terms & Conditions in full for: withdrawal caps, right-to-void clauses, bonus abuse definitions, account closure conditions, dispute resolution process.
  • We review the Privacy Policy for: what data is collected, whether it’s sold/shared with third parties, data retention period, user rights (deletion, export).
  • We check for red flags: unilateral T&C changes without notice, vague “at our discretion” clauses on payouts, arbitration-only dispute clauses with no neutral third party.

Technical Security

  • We check that the TLS/SSL certificate is present and valid (checking the certificate issuer and expiration, not just the padlock icon).
  • We check whether two-factor authentication is available and how it’s implemented (SMS, authenticator app, email).
  • We review the KYC process: what documents are required, when they’re requested (at signup vs. at first withdrawal — we treat the latter as a yellow flag), and the stated verification turnaround time.
  • We check that an AML compliance statement is present and specific (not boilerplate).

Game Fairness / RNG & Live Dealer Integrity

  • We verify RNG certification from a named independent testing lab (e.g., GLI, iTech Labs, eCOGRA, Technical Systems Testing) with a verifiable certificate or seal.
  • We identify the live dealer studio provider (Evolution, Pragmatic Play Live, Vivo, etc.) and cross-check it for its own licensing/reputation.
  • We check the payout percentage (RTP) disclosure: do they publish it per-game, and does it match third-party audit data where available?

Reputation & Track Record

  • We review complaint volume and patterns across at least 3 independent sources (e.g., AskGamblers, Trustpilot, Reddit, casino complaint forums) — we look for recurring themes (delayed withdrawals, account closures after big wins), not one-off complaints.
  • We check the company/operator’s background: how long they’ve been operating, parent company if disclosed, any past blacklisting by other reputable review sites and why.
  • We verify that negative reviews aren’t from a competitor brigading campaign — we check reviewer account age/history where the platform allows it.

2. Banking & Payout Processes (Weighted at 20%)

Deposit Methods

  • We check the number and diversity of deposit methods: cards, crypto, e-wallets, bank transfer, vouchers/prepaid, adjusted for regional preferences.
  • We compare the minimum deposit against the site-wide average (currently ~$25 based in our 200 gambling site review test as of July 2026).
  • We check for any deposit fees, and whether they’re disclosed before or only after the transaction.

Withdrawal Methods & Limits

  • We check the number of withdrawal methods (often narrower than deposit methods — we flag any mismatch, e.g., crypto deposit only, no crypto withdrawal).
  • We check the minimum/maximum withdrawal amounts, and any weekly/monthly caps.
  • We check withdrawal fees, and how many free withdrawals are allowed per period.

Payout Speed

  • We time an actual test withdrawal from request to received funds, per method (crypto, e-wallet, card, check/wire).
  • We note the stated “pending” or “review” period before processing even begins — this is often where sites bury delays.
  • We compare our tested times against the site’s own advertised times and flag any material discrepancy.

3. Bonuses & Promotions (Weighted at 15%)

Welcome Bonus Terms

  • We check the wagering/rollover requirement (e.g., 30x, 40x) and whether it applies to bonus only or bonus + deposit.
  • We check game contribution rates (slots often 100%, table games frequently 10–20% or excluded).
  • We check the maximum cashout cap on bonus winnings, if any, as well as the time limit to clear the bonus.

Sportsbook-Specific Bonus Rules

  • We check the minimum odds requirement to qualify (e.g., bets must be -200 or better).
  • We check the free bet structure: stake returned or not, single-use vs. split.
  • We check the maximum bet size while a bonus is active.

Poker-Specific Bonus Rules

  • We check the rake-based unlock schedule and how much rake equals how much bonus release.
  • We check whether the bonus expires before it can be fully cleared at normal play volume.

Ongoing Promotions Quality

  • We evaluate reload bonuses, cashback, and loyalty/VIP programs for realistic value, not just headline size.
  • We assess the real value of no-deposit bonuses and free spins after applying wagering requirements.
  • We check the clarity of promotional terms on the promotions page itself vs. buried in a separate T&C document.

4. Game & Software Variety (Weighted at 15%)

Casino Game Library

  • We check the total game count and breakdown by category (slots, table games, live dealer, specialty/scratch).
  • We identify software providers and rate them for reputation (tier-1: NetEnt, Evolution, Pragmatic Play, RTG; tier-2/niche: smaller or exclusive-license studios).
  • We check depth within categories: number of blackjack/roulette variants, progressive jackpot availability.

Sportsbook Depth

  • We check the number of sports/leagues covered, including niche markets.
  • We check bet type variety: moneyline, spread, totals, props, parlays, live/in-play betting, futures.
  • We spot-check a sample of lines against 2–3 competitor books for the same event to assess odds competitiveness.

Poker Room Depth

  • We observe player traffic/volume at peak hours (not just claimed figures).
  • We check table variety: cash games, tournaments, Sit & Go, formats (NLHE, PLO, mixed games).
  • We check software features: multi-tabling support, HUD/tracking software policy (allowed, restricted, or banned).

Software Provider Trust

  • We check providers’ own licensing and certification status.
  • We test platform stability during play (crashes, freezes, disconnects during live play).

5. Customer Service (Weighted at 5%)

Service Support Options

  • We test live chat response time (target benchmark: under 2–5 minutes to first human response).
  • We check whether the first response is a bot vs. a live agent, and how quickly it escalates if unresolved.
  • We test answer quality with one simple question (e.g., withdrawal times) and one edge-case question (e.g., bonus eligibility dispute).
  • We test email response time (benchmark: under 24 hours).
  • We check whether the email reply actually answers the specific question or sends a generic template.
  • We check phone hours availability and whether the line is answered by a live agent.

Self-Service Support

  • We check FAQ/help center depth and searchability.
  • We check language availability across chat, email, and help docs.

6. Mobile Compatibility (Weighted at 5%)

  • We test on both iOS and Android (native app where available, mobile browser otherwise).
  • We document the stated minimum system/OS requirements.
  • We check the percentage of the desktop game library actually available on mobile.
  • We test live dealer performance on mobile data vs. WiFi.
  • We test live betting line speed and usability on mobile.
  • We test poker app stability across connection types (WiFi vs. LTE).

7. Site Navigation & UX (Weighted at 5%)

  • We test search, filtering by provider/game type/volatility, and jump-links to popular games or sports directly.
  • We complete and time a full account creation, documenting the process with screenshots.
  • We check the number of steps/pop-ups, fields required, and whether ID verification is front-loaded or deferred.

8. Responsible Gambling Tools (Weighted at 10%)

  • Deposit limits — We check whether players can set daily/weekly/monthly deposit caps themselves, without contacting support, and whether the limit is enforced immediately or only after a cooling-off/notice period (we consider immediate enforcement the better practice).
  • Loss limits and wager limits — We check for these separately from deposit limits, since not all sites offer them; we note whether they exist at all.
  • Session reminders / time-tracking — We check for pop-up or dashboard reminders showing elapsed session time or total time played over a period.
  • Reality checks — We check for interruptive prompts (e.g., every 60 minutes) that force acknowledgment before continuing play, as opposed to a passive counter the player has to seek out.
  • Self-exclusion options — We check the availability of short-term “cool-off” (24 hrs–30 days) and longer-term/permanent self-exclusion. We test whether self-exclusion is easy to find and initiate (it should not require phone/email back-and-forth to activate), and whether it’s honored immediately or has a delay.
  • Account closure vs. self-exclusion distinction — We confirm the site clearly separates a simple account closure (reversible) from self-exclusion (meant to be a harder stop), since some sites blur these to make re-entry too easy.
  • Reversal safeguards during self-exclusion — We check whether a self-excluded account can be quietly reopened by the player (a red flag) or requires a genuine cooling-off/verification process to lift.
  • Visibility and accessibility of RG tools — We check whether these tools are linked prominently (footer, account settings, dedicated page) or buried several clicks deep, and whether they’re available before deposit, not just after.
  • Third-party resource links — We check for the presence and visibility of links to organizations such as the National Council on Problem Gambling, GamCare, or Gamblers Anonymous, and whether they’re generic boilerplate vs. actually integrated into the account/help flow.
  • Marketing restraint — We check whether the site continues to send bonus/promo marketing to accounts that have set limits or self-excluded (a serious red flag if observed).
  • Underage access safeguards — We check age verification at signup and whether it’s enforced before real-money play begins, not just claimed in the T&Cs.
  • For US-facing content, we look for links to real support resources such as the National Council on Problem Gambling and the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER. For non-US markets, responsible gambling resources should be localized to the player’s country or region.

Our Review Process (Step-by-Step)

Our Review Process (Step-by-Step)

We use a structured testing process for our reviews, ensuring our ratings are based on documented checks rather than promotional claims or first impressions. The steps may differ depending on the industry, location, or account access, but we usually include the following steps.

  • Intake — We confirm the vertical (casino/sportsbook/poker), jurisdiction(s) it accepts, and which sections of the rubric apply.
  • Document review — We read T&Cs, privacy policy, bonus terms, and license documentation before touching the live site, and note red flags.
  • License verification — We check the regulator’s public registry directly and screenshot the result for the internal record.
  • Account creation & KYC test — We sign up, document the process with screenshots/timestamps, and log how long approval takes. When KYC is required, we record the types of documents required and the timeframes for approval.
  • Funding test — We make a real deposit using at least one traditional method (card) and one alternative method (crypto or e-wallet) to test both. These deposits are usually between $10 and $50, depending on the casino’s minimum deposit, payment options, and whether a bonus is being tested. When we do not deposit, we make that clear through the review process and rely on platform testing, published terms, free-play access, bonus review, and independent reputation checks.
  • Gambling type testing — We play/bet across the core game categories relevant to the type of gambling site, and test on desktop and mobile (iOS + Android). For casino reviews, we check slots, table games, live dealer games, jackpot games, and specialty games. We review how easy it is to find games, whether providers are clearly listed, how stable the games are, and whether the desktop and mobile experience are consistent.

For sportsbooks or poker rooms, we test the relevant areas, such as bet slips, odds display, live betting, tournament listings, table traffic, and mobile usability.

  • Support testing — We run live chat, email, and phone (if available) with one routine and one edge-case question, and log response times verbatim.
  • Withdrawal test — We request a real withdrawal via at least one fast method (crypto/e-wallet) and one traditional method (bank/check) if feasible, and log actual time-to-funds.
  • External research — We cross-check reputation on 3+ independent review/complaint sources and search for news coverage of the operator. We do not treat one isolated complaint as proof of a systemic issue. We look for repeated patterns, especially delayed withdrawals, account closures after wins, bonus disputes, unresolved KYC problems, or fake licensing claims.
  • Draft & fact-check — We write the review, sourcing all quantitative claims (withdrawal times, bonus terms, RTPs) back to the testing log.
  • Editorial sign-off —Before publication, a second team member reviews the findings for accuracy, consistency, missing context, and potential bias. This final review checks whether the verdict matches the evidence and whether any limitations in testing are clearly explained. Our goal is not to make every casino sound good. It is to give players a clear, honest view of what we tested, what we verified, what we could not test, and what they should check before depositing.

Note: Not every test is available to every operator, since factors such as legal access, location rules, KYC requirements, payment options, and account approval can vary by market.

Where To See Our Methodology In Action

Responsible Gambling

Online casinos, sportsbooks, and poker rooms make gambling more accessible to the public. While we promote healthy gambling habits, such as setting budgets and using self-exclusion tools, we know that gambling can become an addiction. Chasing your losses or moving around your personal finances to accommodate gambling are signs of a gambling problem.

If you think you or a loved one is struggling with gambling addiction, help is available:
