GTA 6 sales predictions are built on years of hype for the next Grand Theft Auto sequel. Rockstar Games has been working on the game since 2018, and it is scheduled to launch in November 2026.

Below, I break down the latest GTA 6 sales forecasts, explain why expectations are sky-high, and show you where to bet on GTA 6 prior to its release this fall.

GTA 6 Sales Predictions: What the Numbers Could Look Like

After years of work and multiple delays, Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled for release on November 19th, 2026.

Fans of the franchise have been waiting years for this game, and the expectations are high. The timing of GTA 6’s release should make it one of the most popular items for Black Friday sales ahead of Christmas 2026. It is impossible to know how many copies GTA 6 will sell, but expectations are high.

For context, GTA 5 was released in 2013 and sold over 25 million copies in the first 72 hours. It has been re-released multiple times to adapt to newer console generations and has sold over 230 million copies.

After setting a record with $1 billion in revenue in its first three days, GTA 5 has generated nearly $10 billion in revenue since its original release.

A lot has changed since GTA 5 was released in 2013, including how players enjoy games. Fans can buy and pre-order digital copies of the latest releases, eliminating the fear of stores running out of physical copies. This shift from tangible to digital media should help propel GTA 6 to record-breaking heights.

Projections suggest GTA 6 will have a similarly successful launch, with experts estimating 25 to 30 million copies sold and $2 to $3 billion in revenue. The game is also expected to have a hefty price tag, costing $80 to $100 for the base game alone.

Why GTA 6 Sales Will Break Records

Years of build-up have continuously raised the bar for the upcoming release of GTA 6. The developers also have billions of dollars invested and will do whatever they can to avoid being the next Duke Nukem Forever.

Demand Built on Years of Expectations

Since the first installment hit shelves in 1997, the Grand Theft Auto series has been one of the most successful video game franchises ever. The franchise has been a hit across consoles, PCs, and even handheld devices.

The last new release, GTA 5, came out in 2013 and broke records. GTA 5 and Grand Theft Auto Online were the 15th and 16th installments in the series, which averaged nearly one release per year from 1997 to 2013.

Since then, developers have expanded the GTA 5 universe and re-released the game multiple times to keep up with the latest systems. They also remastered older titles to keep fans interested.

The next installment, GTA 6, was confirmed in 2022, but development began in 2018.

Hype and expectations for GTA 6 have been building for years despite multiple delays. Even if it is released in November 2026, the 13-year gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6 is the longest between installments in the franchise’s history.

Record-Breaking Trailers

Promotional game trailers are nothing new, but the trailers have helped build the projections for GTA VI’s sales numbers.

So far, two official Grand Theft Auto 6 trailers have been released, and they have both garnered 150+ million views.

TrailerRelease DateCurrent Views
1st GTA 6 TrailerDec. 4th, 2023281+ million
2nd GTA 6 TrailerMay 6th, 2025164+ million

The trailers have done their job in building anticipation for the game. GTA 6 won the Most Wanted Game at the 2024 and 2025 Golden Joystick Awards. It also won the Most Anticipated Game award at the ‘24 and ‘25 Game Awards.

Releasing on Multiple Platforms

High demand is not the only factor pushing Grand Theft Auto 6 toward a record-breaking launch. Unlike the original Grand Theft Auto, which was only available on MS-DOS and Windows at launch, you can buy GTA 6 at launch on the PS5 or Xbox Series X/S.

A PC version is also expected to be available in the future, but not this fall.

Excluding PC gamers will limit the initial release numbers, but the demand for GTA 6 among console gamers is strong enough to survive it. Limiting GTA 6 to the latest generation of consoles and the game’s reported size, up to 250 GB, could also limit its market.

Take-Two’s Need for a Blockbuster Launch

Take-Two, the developers of GTA 6, are banking on a record-breaking release. Living up to expectations that have been building for over a decade is hard enough. However, Take-Two has also invested nearly $2 billion in the project.

Part of the price tag reflects the multiple delays during the game’s development.

Here is a timeline leading up to GTA 6’s release date in 2026:

  • First Trailer: December 2023 –  The game’s official name, GTA 6, is confirmed in its first trailer, but no release date is set.
  • Original release date: Fall 2025 – Fans were told the highly anticipated sequel would be available in Fall 2025, but no specific date was set.
  • First delay: May 2, 2025 – Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would be delayed until May 26th, 2026.
  • Second trailer: May 6th, 2025: After announcing the delayed release, Rockstar dropped the second GTA 6 trailer.
  • Second delay: November 6th, 2025 – Less than six months later, Rockstar announced GTA 6 would be delayed again, this time until November 19th, 2026.

With nearly a decade of work and 10 figures invested in the project, Take-Two and Rockstar need Grand Theft Auto 6 to be a hit from day one.
