Bengals vs. Texans
- Verdict: Bet on the Bengals to win
- Best captured price: Lucky Rebel at +130 odds
- Break-even probability: 43.48%
- Target price: Even money odds
- Primary risk: The Bengals’ offensive line could struggle against Houston’s pass rush.
- Confidence: Moderate – Houston’s defense could not contain the Bills, and the Bengals have a similarly high-powered offense.
Cincinnati Bengals (+130)
The Bengals are road underdogs this week against the Texans. Houston lost a shootout last week to the Bills, and its vaunted defense from last season was nowhere to be found as the Texans allowed over 400 total yards.
Cincinnati’s offense will present more issues for the Texans’ defense. The Bengals had 351 total yards against the Buccaneers. More importantly, Cincy’s defense looked improved, sacking Baker Mayfield four times and recovering four fumbles.
The Bengals’ path to the upset starts with forcing CJ Stroud into mistakes. Cincy’s passing attack will also be key against a Texans’ defense that allowed 323 passing yards last week, the fourth-most in the NFL in Week 1.
Steelers vs. Patriots
- Verdict: Bet the Patriots to win
- Best captured price: BetOnline at -240 odds
- Break-even probability: 70.59%
- Target price: -300 or better
- Primary risk: The Patriots’ offense could struggle without A.J. Brown.
- Confidence: High – New England’s defense should dominate an underwhelming Pittsburgh offense.
New England Patriots (-240)
The Patriots led the Seahawks 10-0 in the third quarter of their Week 1 matchup. Unfortunately for New England fans, Drake Maye and the offense stalled out after AJ Brown left the game with a high ankle sprain.
Brown is out this week, but the Patriots face a much easier matchup this weekend against Pittsburgh. The Steelers beat the Pats in Foxborough last year by forcing five turnovers.
Pittsburgh’s defense is great, but its offense could not sustain drives against Atlanta. Aaron Rodgers and company managed only 13 points in the team’s 20-13 win over the Falcons. The Steelers’ lone touchdown drive only went for 31 yards and came after a Cooper Rush interception.
If Maye can limit his turnovers this weekend, New England should roll the Steelers on Sunday.
Browns vs. Buccaneers
- Verdict: Bet on Cleveland to cover
- Best captured price: BetOnline lists the Browns at +9.0 (-118)
- Break-even probability: 54.13%
- Target price: +7.0 or more
- Primary risk: The Browns’ offense struggled to score last week.
- Confidence: Moderate – Tampa Bay is an easier matchup for a Browns team that was embarrassed last week.
Cleveland Browns +9.0 (-118)
The Todd Monken era in Cleveland began with a Week 1 blowout loss to the Jaguars. Monken and the Browns face another high-flying offense this week in Tampa Bay.
On the bright side, the Bucs’ defense is not as good as the Jags’, and Tampa Bay’s offense is prone to mistakes. Cincinnati sacked Baker Mayfield four times and also recovered four fumbles in the Bengals’ win last week.
Cleveland’s defense failed to force any turnovers last week and sacked Trevor Lawrence only once in the loss. An easier matchup against a Bucs’ offense more prone to making mistakes will lead to a better day for the Browns’ defense. They will not win, but Cleveland has a chance to cover the 9.0-point spread.
Eagles vs. Titans
- Verdict: Bet Saquon Barkley to score a TD
- Best captured price: BetUS at -125 odds
- Break-even probability: 55.56%
- Target price: -200 or shorter odds
- Primary risk: The Tush Push vultures Barkley’s goal-line touches.
- Confidence: High – Tennessee allowed 152 rushing yards in Week 1, the 7th-most in the league.
Saquon Barkley Anytime TD Scorer (-125)
Saquon Barkley had 15 carries for 83 yards in the Eagles’ 24-22 win over the Commanders. He also caught one pass but lost three yards on the play. Barkley is listed at -125 odds to score his touchdown of the season this weekend against the Titans.
Tennessee allowed over 150 rushing yards to the Jets last week, including a 100+ yard day by Breece Hall. Backup RB Braelon Allen added another 40 yards on 10 carries, and the Jets’ top two backs averaged over 4.4 YPC.
The Eagles’ offensive line is hampered after G Landon Dickerson was placed on IR. However, the Titans’ weak run defense and Barkley’s receiving ability should help the former Offensive Player of the Year find the end zone at least once this weekend.
Raiders vs. Chargers
- Verdict: Bet on Michael Mayer to score a TD
- Best captured price: BetUS at +280 odds
- Break-even probability: 26.32%
- Target price: +200 or longer
- Primary risk: Brock Bowers could return earlier than expected from knee surgery.
- Confidence: High – Mayer had six receptions last week, tied for the most on the Raiders.
Michael Mayer Anytime TD Scorer (+280)
Days before the start of the season, the Raiders announced that star TE Brock Bowers had knee surgery and would miss the first couple of weeks of the season. Returning less than two weeks after surgery would be an unnecessary risk for Bowers. However, rumors of his return have helped boost Michael Mayer’s anytime TD odds to +280.
Assuming Bowers does not play, Mayer should be one of the Raiders’ top receiving options again this weekend. Mayer had six receptions in Week 1, tied for the most on the team, and led the team with seven targets.
The Raiders leaned heavily on their running game, rushing 37 times in the win over Miami. Kirk Cousins will have to throw more to beat LA this week, and Mayer should be targeted early and often.
Seahawks vs. Cardinals
- Verdict: Bet on Arizona to cover
- Best captured price: Lucky Rebel lists the Cardinals at +4.0 (-108)
- Break-even probability: 51.92%
- Target price: +3.0 or more
- Primary risk: Seattle’s defense held New England to 10 points, tied for the second-fewest in the NFL last week.
- Confidence: Moderate – The Seahawks offense will be limited with Drew Lock at QB, making it easier for Arizona to cover.
Arizona Cardinals +4.0 (-108)
Arizona is getting 4.0 points as the underdog in the Cardinals’ home opener. The Cards upset LA last week, taking down the Chargers 26-14 at SoFi. Mike LaFluer has another chance to show off his offensive brilliance against a stout Seahawks defense.
Seattle overcame the loss of Sam Darnold to pull off a double-digit comeback in the Seahawks’ 13-10 win last week. Another week of Drew Lock being under center all but guarantees a low-scoring game from Seattle’s offense.
Minimal scoring output from Seattle increases the odds that Arizona can cover. The Cards can further help their chances by winning the turnover battle again this week and Jacoby Brissett continuing to average over 270 passing YPG as the starter.
The Market’s Best NFL Pick for Week 2
Oddsmakers have the 49ers as the biggest favorite of the week, with San Francisco’s odds ranging from -950 to -1100 at most sportsbooks. Brock Purdy and company are laying 13.0 points against the visiting Dolphins this weekend.
San Fran has a better roster top to bottom and a more proven head coach than Miami.
However, as many bettors and NFL Survivor players learned last week, a large point spread does not guarantee a win. The Chargers were the biggest favorite last week at -10.0 and lost by double digits to the visiting Cardinals.
Several barriers could derail the 49ers this week. For starters, they played in Australia last week after spending a week in the Land Down Under. Also, the 49ers’ injury woes have continued, with three players being hurt in Australia.
Another heavy favorite the market suggests backing is Baltimore. The Ravens are laying 8.0 points against a Saints team that nearly upset the Lions last week. If the New Orleans offense can build on its Week 1 performance, Tyler Shough and company will be more competitive than the 8.0-point line suggests.
Key Factors to Watch in NFL Week 2
- Rest advantage: Teams on short weeks or those that have to travel long distances tend to play worse.
- Unusually high scoring in Week 1: Week 1 featured historic amounts of scoring, but that is unsustainable. Expect scores to come down in Week 2.
- Watch for extreme weather: The weather, especially the humidity, was a factor in many Week 1 games. Keep an eye on extreme conditions, including rain, before betting on Week 2 matchups.
