Our Breeders’ Cup Predictions
We focused on the biggest races for our Breeders’ Cup predictions. These are our top picks for the Classic, Turf, Sprint, Mile, and other eagerly anticipated races:
Breeders’ Cup Classic Predictions
Sovereignty should extend his impressive winning streak when he steps onto the dirt track at Del Mar on November 1. The Godolphin colt delivered a magnificent performance in the Kentucky Derby, bursting past Journalism on the home straight to win by 1 ½ lengths. He skipped the Preakness, but he returned to action in the Belmont Stakes and won by 3 lengths.
That high-profile victory cemented his status as this season’s standout 3-year-old. Sovereignty has continued to dominate his rivals in the ensuing months. He rallied to win the G2 Jim Dandy by a length from Baeza in July, before blitzing the field in the G1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga in August. He won that race by 10 lengths, extending his winning streak to four races.
Sovereignty is now preparing to face older rivals for the first time. It will be intriguing to see him go head-to-head with 4-year-old Sierra Leone in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Sierra Leone is the reigning champion, and he will retire after this race. He won the G1 Whitney Stakes this summer, but he could only finish second in the G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup over 1 ¼ miles in August. Sovereignty always finds a way to overhaul his rivals on the home straight, and he should be able to outpace Sierra Leone.
The field is full of danger. Journalism was second to Sovereignty in the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont, and he also won the Preakness. He’s since won the G1 Haskell Stakes, and he looks in fine form. You can’t rule out Baeza, while Fierceness, Forever Young, and Mindframe are all capable of winning this race. But one that really stands out is Antiquarian. He beat Sierra Leone by 1 ½ lengths in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on August 31, and he’s been on an upward curve, so he could be in the mix on November 1.
- Winner: Sovereignty (+190)
- Exacta: Sovereignty-Journalism
- Trifecta: Sovereignty-Journalism-Antiquarian
Breeders' Cup Turf Prediction
Minnie Hauk has enjoyed a superb season in Europe. She won the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks, and the Yorkshire Oaks, and she was unlucky to finish second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Her pedigree is impeccable, as her sire is Frankel, her grandsire is Galileo, and her damsire is Dansili. Aiden O’Brien’s star filly looks capable of winning the Turf, and odds of +200 at SportsBetting.ag look appealing.
- Winner: Minnie Hauk (+200 with SportsBetting.ag)
Breeders' Cup Sprint Prediction
Imagination is the most complete sprinter in the field for this race. He’s fast from the gate, he offers tactical speed, and he should be able to pick off his rivals in the closing stages of the race.
- Winner: Imagination (+350 with Bovada)
Breeders' Cup Mile Prediction
Tactical runners could have an advantage in the Mile, as the pace should be solid rather than blistering. Notable Speech stands out, as he displays tactical versatility and world-class acceleration. Charlie Appleby’s colt finished third in this race last year, but he could be even better this time around.
- Winner: Notable Speech (+375 with BetOnline)
Breeders' Cup Distaff Prediction
Seismic Beauty has displayed remarkable consistency this season. The 4-year-old filly won the G1 Clement L Hirsch Stakes at Del Mar in August, extending her winning streak to three races. The Distaff looks wide open, but she’s the most reliable runner in the field.
- Winner: Seismic Beauty (+250 with Bovada)
Breeders' Cup Juvenile Prediction
Ted Noffey is the -110 favorite for this race. That makes sense, as he’s unbeaten and proven over this distance. However, there’s little value on him, so Brant at +300 looks more appealing. He’s the only runner with comparable figures to Ted Noffey, and he’s won both starts so far. If Ted Noffey gets caught wide or succumbs to pressure, Brant could capitalize.
- Winner: Brant (+300 with Bovada)
