Can Paul Challenge for the Title?

Yes, Jake Paul, a former YouTuber, can challenge for a real boxing championship. The much-maligned celebrity-turned-boxer has been widely criticized for fighting fellow YouTubers, old MMA fighters, and a 58-year-old Mike Tyson.

Public opinion aside, Paul has earned a 12-1 professional record. He also has wins in sanctioned fights over former champions. You can also wager on Paul’s next fight using the top boxing betting sites.

After Paul beat Chávez Jr., the WBA announced that Paul earned a spot in their cruiserweight rankings. He is ranked 14th, and making the Problem Child eligible for a title shot. Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (48-1) is the reigning WBA cruiserweight champion.

Badou Jack, not Gilberto Ramirez, has the best odds of any current champion to be Paul’s next opponent. Jack is currently the WBC cruiserweight champion.

Tommy Fury, the only man to beat Paul thus far in his professional career, has the third-best odds to fight the Problem Child next. The younger Fury is listed at 4-1 odds.

Ramirez is tied for the next-best odds with Nate Diaz at +500 each. Paul beat Diaz, 40, in the latter’s professional boxing debut in August 2023. Jorge Masvidal rounds out the top six at 8-1 odds.

Anthony Joshua (+200)

Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is the 2-1 favorite to fight Paul next. He is 28-4 in his professional career, with only career losses coming against Andy Ruiz Jr., Oleksandr Usyk twice, and Daniel Dubois.

Joshua has held multiple championships in his career, including, among others:

• IBF heavyweight title
• WBO heavyweight title
• IBO heavyweight title

Beating Joshua would be a major feather in Paul’s cap. However, the Problem Child would be a major size disadvantage. Joshua is 6’6, has an 82-inch reach, and weighed in at 252.7 pounds for his last fight. For comparison, Paul is 6’1 with a 76-inch reach and weighed 199 pounds for his fight against Chávez Jr.

Badou Jack (+300)

The WBA ranked Paul, but it is the WBC cruiserweight champion who has the better odds to face the former YouTuber next. Badou Jack is listed at a +300 in the current odds for Paul’s next opponent.

Jack is 29-3-3 in his professional career. He defeated Ilunga Makabu for the title in February 2023. His only title defense thus far was a majority decision win over Noel Mikaelian. Jack has a rematch with Mikaelian, but no date has been announced for the fight.

The rematch between Jack and Mikaelian could delay a potential fight with Paul. Jack is also 41 years old, so he could retire before stepping into the ring with the Problem Child.

Tommy Fury (+400)

Secure sports betting sites list Tommy Fury at 4-1 to be the next person to take on the Problem Child. In their first fight, Fury defeated Paul by split decision.

Fury handed Paul his first, and so far only, defeat as a professional. Paul could all but erase that loss from his record if he took down Fury in a rematch. On the other hand, a second loss to Fury could significantly derail Paul’s title dreams.

Since defeating Paul in 2023, Fury (11-0) has only fought twice. He earned unanimous decision wins over Olajide Olatunji and Kenan Hanjalic. His inactivity should make Fury well-rested for a rematch, but it could also make him rusty.

Gilberto Ramirez (+500)

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez is tied at 5-1 for the fourth-best odds to face Paul next. Ramirez is 48-1 in his professional career. His only loss came in November 2022, when he lost against Dmitry Bivol by unanimous decision.

Since that loss, Ramirez moved up from light heavyweight (175 pounds) to cruiserweight (200 pounds). He defeated Arsen Goulamirian by unanimous decision for the WBA cruiserweight title. In his first defense, he defeated Chris Billam-Smith and won the WBO cruiserweight belt.

Paul’s power has given him an edge over the YouTubers and retired MMA fighters he has boxed. However, the Problem Child would not have a power advantage over Ramirez. Zurdo has earned 30 of his 48 career wins by knockout.

Nate Diaz (+500)

Another potential opponent for Paul available at 5-1 odds is Nate Diaz. The former UFC star was famous for his stand-up skills in the Octagon. However, Diaz could not beat Paul in their first fight, losing to the Problem Child by unanimous decision.

After the loss, Diaz said his contest with Paul was “not a real fight.” He also said he would be willing to fight Paul again in “any art.”

Paul is focused on his goal of becoming a boxing champion. So, as interesting as it would be to see Diaz face Paul in MMA, a rematch would likely only happen in the boxing ring. It also would not benefit Paul’s title pursuit to face Diaz again. 

Jorge Masvidal (+800)

Speaking of striking heavy former MMA superstars, Jorge Masvidal is listed at +800 odds to be Paul’s next opponent. Masvidal’s striking helped him earn a 35-17 record in MMA. He earned 16 of his career wins by knockout.

Since retiring from MMA in 2023, Masvidal has tested the waters in boxing. He lost his debut against Nate Diaz by unanimous decision.

Inexperience in professional boxing is not the only hurdle Masvidal would face in a matchup with Paul. Gamebred spent most of his MMA career at lightweight (155 pounds) and occasionally competed at welterweight (170 pounds).

Paul currently competes in boxing as a cruiserweight (200 pounds). So, Masvidal would be at a significant size disadvantage in this potential matchup.

Paul’s career thus far has been riddled with surprise opponents, including a nearly 60-year-old Mike Tyson. Here are three sleepers I believe could step up and fight the Problem Child next.

Tank (+1000) and Canelo (+5000) are stars in boxing. However, Paul would have a significant size and weight advantage over both.

McGregor (+2500), on the other hand, would continue Paul’s history of boxing retired MMA fighters. The Irish fighter was a major star in his prime and would guarantee a huge payday for both him and Paul.

Who Will Jake Paul Fight Next?

Jake Paul’s pursuit of boxing gold received a major boost after his win over Chávez Jr. Now that he is ranked in the WBA, Paul is one step closer to challenging for a belt.

However, I do not think that Paul will fight a title in his next appearance. Also, despite the odds, I do not think Paul will face Anthony Joshua. The former heavyweight champion is simply too big for Paul.

With that in mind, I am picking Tommy Fury (+400) to be Paul’s next opponent. Avenging his loss against Fury would give Paul more experience and prove that he is ready for a shot at a championship.
