Phillies’ star and two-time MVP Bryce Harper has come under fire for recording a video for a gambling VIP. Allegedly, Harper was recruited by the sportsbook to help retain one of their VIPs who had already lost over a million in wagers.
What Did Bryce Harper Do in the VIP Gambling Video?
Harper recorded a video for Terry Thompson, a VIP member of an online sportsbook. In the video, Harper wished Thompson a happy Thanksgiving and gave a shout out to Harper’s son.
On the surface, the video looks innocent. However, Thompson’s gambling hobby had taken a turn into addiction, and the sportsbook used Harper’s video to encourage the “VIP” to continue betting.
Who Is Terry Thompson?
Terry Thompson, the fan who received Harper’s video, was just your average sports fan with extra money to wager.
Thompson is now making headlines after he sued multiple sportsbooks, alleging they used their VIP services to take advantage of his gambling addiction. According to Thompson, his VIP host, Bryttanni Morgan, regularly sent him gifts to encourage him to continue betting.
The rewards included, among others, the personalized video from Harper and tickets to multiple sporting events, such as Super Bowl 56.
How Much did Thompson Wager?
Thompson claims to have wagered over $18.5 million on sports. At the time he received the video from Harper, Thompson was $1.5 million in the hole. He continued betting after receiving the video from Harper, pushing his losses over $2 million.
According to Thompson, his addiction involved placing microbets on games. He took out multiple mortgages on his house and sold investments to fund his gambling addiction.
Will Harper get in Trouble With the MLB?
The MLB, Harper, and Harper’s agent have not yet commented on the situation. However, Harper is allowed to seek outside endorsements from sportsbooks as long as he does not specifically encourage players to bet on the MLB.
Responsible Gambling
Thompson’s situation is a cautionary tale for gamblers. Using responsible gambling techniques, such as following strict betting limits and only wagering money you can afford to lose, can help many avoid similar fates.
It is also okay to ask for support from professionals when you need it. Programs like the National Council on Problem Gambling and Gamblers Anonymous are excellent online resources to help you combat gambling addiction.
