Kevin Durant’s Desired Teams

Nearly a decade ago, Kevin Durant made the controversial decision to leave Oklahoma City and join the Golden State Warriors. KD won two rings with the Warriors, but an Achilles injury in the NBA Finals prevented a three-peat.

Durant left Golden State after the 2019 Finals, joining Brooklyn in a sign-and-trade. After three and a half seasons with the Nets, KD was traded to the Suns. KD has not made it past the second round since leaving Golden State.

Two of his former teams have thrived in KD’s absence. Golden State won another championship in 2022, and OKC is on its way to winning the 2025 NBA Finals.

Phoenix missed the playoffs this year, and KD trade rumors quickly started to swirl. According to reports, KD would like to play for one of the following teams:

• San Antonio Spurs
• Houston Rockets

All three are warm-weather teams that could compete for a title in the foreseeable future. Houston desperately needs a scorer and had the second-best record in the West in 2024. The Spurs are building a dynastic team around Victor Wembanyama, and Miami needs to replace the production of Jimmy Butler, who now plays in Golden State.

What Does Phoenix Want for KD?

KD is under contract with Phoenix for one more season. So, if he is going to leave Phoenix, he will likely need to be traded.

That begs the question: What do the Suns want for Kevin Durant? After all, Phoenix gave up a haul to get KD that included four first-round picks, one pick swap, and three players, including Mikal Bridges.

Phoenix acquired KD in the middle of the 2023 season and is still dealing with the fallout of the trade.

Early reports indicated that the Suns wanted “quality” draft picks, including at least one early pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, no team will trade for KD if he is unwilling to sign an extension with them. Durant’s age also lowers the likely return Phoenix can get for the aging superstar, and the Suns may need to lower their asking price.

Houston (+250), Miami (+250), and San Antonio (+350) were all on KD’s list of desired destinations. So, it is no surprise that those teams lead the way in this betting market. Minnesota is also a top contender at +350 and is tied with the Spurs for the third-best odds to acquire KD.

Rounding out the top five is Toronto at 5-1 odds. The Raptors were not on KD’s list of preferred teams. However, this would not be the first time that Toronto traded for and had success with a superstar who did not want to play in the Great White North.

The odds fall quickly after the top five. New York has the next-best odds at 30-1. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics are tied with the Knicks at +3000 odds to be Durant’s next team.

Houston Rockets (+250)

Top sports betting sites have Houston as a +250 co-favorite to be KD’s next team if he leaves Phoenix. The Rockets’ stellar defense helped them secure the second seed in the West this season.

However, Houston’s lack of offense resulted in a first-round exit from the playoffs at the hands of Golden State. That loss to the Warriors, KD’s former team, could lead to the Rockets making a big move for a scorer this offseason.

Houston needs a player like KD, and they have the assets to trade for him. The Rockets currently hold the 10th overall pick in the 2025 Draft. They also have multiple young players they could send to Phoenix in exchange for Durant.

Miami Heat (+250)

The other co-favorite to trade for Kevin Durant is Miami. The Heat are looking for a new identity after trading away Jimmy Butler at the deadline. 

Miami beat Chicago and Atlanta in the Play-In Tournament to secure the eighth seed in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Heat were then swept by Cleveland in the first round. Trading for Durant could take the heat from fringe playoff contenders to potential championship contenders in the wide-open Eastern Conference.

The issue becomes what the Heat would give up for the soon-to-be 37-year-old. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, the team’s two best players, would likely be off the table, and the Heat do not have a lottery pick. Miami’s first pick in the 2025 Draft is the 20th pick.

San Antonio Spurs (+350)

Two teams are listed at +350 to acquire Kevin Durant before game one of next season. The first is San Antonio, which has been aggressive about building around Wemby.

San Antonio traded for De’Aaron Fox at the deadline. The Spurs could further their pursuit of being a contender in the West by adding Durant this summer. KD would add more veteran leadership to a young team.

On paper, the Spurs have plenty of trade assets. San Antonio has the reigning Rookie of the Year, Stephon Castle, and the second overall pick.

There is no denying that Minnesota would put KD in a position to win a third championship. The Timberwolves have made the Western Conference Finals in back-to-back seasons. However, Anthony Edwards has not been able to get Minnesota over the hump.

KD could bring championship experience and scoring to Minnesota. However, it would be a risk for the Timberwolves to trade for KD without assurances that the superstar would sign an extension to stay in Minnesota.

Best Sleeper Team to Trade for KD

The top teams in the KD sweepstakes are clear, but that does not mean that a sleeper team will not make a surprise move in the coming weeks. Of the potential dark horses, I like Boston (+3000) to make a move.

New York has publicly shut down any potential KD trade. Cleveland, which is also listed at +3000, does not have a first-round pick and would need to break up a talented core that had the best record in the East.

Boston does not have a lottery pick, but it owns two of the top 32 selections. Also, with Jayson Tatum likely missing all of the 2026 season, adding KD would allow the Celtics to remain championship contenders next year, even if they cannot extend him.

Joining the East could also be KD’s best chance at winning another championship before he retires. The Eastern Conference is much less competitive than the West.

Kevin Durant Next Team Predictions
